Project summary

The bank's loyalty program operates under the name Pocket — a fully digital loyalty program based on earning points and redeeming them through Warba Bank's app services or select partnering merchants. The loyalty program extended the functionality of the existing mobile banking application.

Key results

  • Efficient implementation of loyalty features into existing applications via headless, API-first architecture
  • Quick integration with the banking system, enterprise LDAP, single sign-on (SSO), and external gift providers
  • Only three months of implementation to deliver a dedicated loyalty program
  • Over 55,000 members enrolled and over 100 million points converted into rewards in the first year of operation

The challenge

"One of Warba Bank's goals is to help our customers achieve their life goals and grow their businesses... We concluded that the loyalty program was essential to connect everything together." — Mohamed El Shareef, Chief Digital Officer, Warba Bank

In 2020, Warba Bank wanted to increase mobile app engagement and grow mobile payments. The biggest business challenge was designing a loyalty scheme that fit the existing customer experience and was easy to understand. Technically, the loyalty engine needed to integrate with legacy systems (SSO, enterprise LDAP, payment technology) while meeting high security standards, including an on-premise, private-cloud deployment.

The bank loyalty program: loyalty mechanics of Pocket

Members earn points for activities such as:

  • Paying bills via the mobile app — 1% of the bill in points for one-time payments, 2% for scheduled payments
  • Using a credit card instead of cashback — 1 Kuwaiti dinar cashback = 100 points
  • Inviting friends — 6 points per invite, up to 1,500 points if the friend transfers their salary to the bank
  • Transferring salary — every Kuwaiti dinar of the resulting cash gift = 100 points

Points can be redeemed via the Entertainer app (buy-one-get-one-free offers from brands like Ibis Hotel, Wendy's, and Shine Clinic), a digital wallet for offline shopping discounts, or converted to miles.

API-first loyalty software that matches the strategy

The loyalty scheme was built on the loyalty points module and rewards management system, with a custom "lock-and-release" feature for locking/unlocking and manually burning points at the API or system level. The system was installed on internal hosting with extensive event logging for security.

"We chose Open Loyalty because of three reasons. First, their robust loyalty engine simply fits our expectations and covers all our business requirements. Next, with Open Loyalty's API-first approach, we could minimize challenges during the integration process... Last but not least, Open Loyalty's team provided us with great support." — Mohamed El Shareef

Closing paragraph

The new, personalized loyalty system launched in just three months, integrating with the banking system, enterprise LDAP, SSO, and an external gift provider. With over 55,000 members enrolled and over 100 million points converted into rewards in the first year, the Pocket loyalty program is a success, and the Warba Bank and Open Loyalty teams continue working together.
