ECKware uses a loyalty engine to develop an exclusive district card in Munich

Learn how ECKware uses Open Loyalty engine to develop Siedlerkarte - a loyalty
and bonus program exclusively for residents of Munich's Werksviertel-Mitte district.

Project summary

ECKware GmbH offers complete IT and telecommunications solutions for medium-sized companies.

One of the prominent projects in the company’s portfolio is Siedlerkarte - a loyalty and bonus program exclusively for residents of Munich's Werksviertel-Mitte district.

What’s unique about the program is that it’s not revenue driven. The goal is to provide rewarding experiences, improve the quality of life, and build a sense of belonging to the local community.

Here's how the team at ECKware GmbH uses Open Loyalty’s flexible loyalty engine to apply different loyalty and gamification mechanics to run the project.

"Open Loyalty offers a wide range of possibilities we can use to bring our ideas to life. I know that in the next two years we are going to introduce a lot of changes and I don’t need to switch the system."

Daniel Fischer
Head of IT Project Management at ECKware GmbH

Key results

  • Omnichannel loyalty program provided through a physical loyalty card and a mobile app.
  • Closed loop coalition program with 25 merchants.

The challenge

The goal was to design a program for everyone who works in the Werksviertel-Mitte (8 hectares of the old/former industrial areas of the Pfanni works and Zündapp production halls converted into a modern district with about 5000/6000 residents) so that they want to stay and live in the area.

The main challenge is to integrate everyone into a closed-loop community where both residents and businesses benefit from each other and thrive.

The team at ECKware needed flexible loyalty technology to implement loyalty and gamification mechanics without the need to rely on external developers.

"The previous system was not flexible enough. We couldn’t customize the features. Open Loyalty offers a wide range of possibilities we can use to bring our ideas to life. I know that in the next two years we are going to introduce a lot of changes and I don’t need to switch the system."

The solution: Siedlerkarte - district card by settlers for settlers.

Siedlerkarte (the settler card) is a loyalty and bonus card available exclusively for everyone who works and lives in Werksviertel-Mitte available via:

  • traditional plastic card
  • mobile app

The program is constantly evolving and the team regularly adds new capabilities.

What settlers can do now

  • Pay
  • Collect dumplings
  • Charge digitally
  • Open doors
  • Mobility – settler fleet
  • Room booking
  • Vouchers
  • Online ordering system
  • Settler card promotions
  • Company pension plan
"With Open Loyalty we can run campaigns and build our own loyalty shop. We are independent, we run the program without the need to rely on external developers."

What settlers will be able to do soon

Siedlerkarte is in a constant state of evolution introducing new partner and member benefits

[Coming soon] Flakes: currency incentivising community cooperation

One of the ideas in the making is Flakes - currency used by the community in exchange for favors. The idea is that people have currency to incentivize cooperation e.g., pensioners can order shopping online and ask community members to deliver shopping to their door. Once the shopping is delivered, the person who placed an order can transfer a certain number of Flakes to the account of the person who delivered it.

The Flakes could be exchanged for exclusive rewards (e.g. an evening among the sheep at the mountain house on the roof of a building).

On one of the buildings there's a mountain hut with a 2000 square meter natural landscape and sheep.

New ideas for further program development come from several sources:

  • The sponsor
  • A group of 19 companies operating locally (with more than 200 employees are beta testers for the program)
  • The settlers who can give feedback through the app (Siedler service)
"Open Loyalty offers a wide range of possibilities we can use to bring our ideas to life. I know that in the next two years we are going to introduce a lot of changes and I don’t need to switch the system."

The technology: a flexible loyalty engine integrated with the existing toolkit

Open Loyalty serves as the primary database for all program members. It’s synchronized with a physical card database and a food ordering system.

The platform provides three member wallets:

  1. Employer-financed meal vouchers
  2. Credit card
  3. Dumplings (loyalty currency)

For affiliated retailers, there is an app available to scan the card and process payments. Each retailer has a dedicated channel in Open Loyalty, providing a transparent view of redeemed vouchers, utilized credits, and accumulated dumplings.

"I’d recommend Open Loyalty because of the flexibility of the engine. It’s very reliable software based on high-quality adaptive technology."

Daniel Fischer
Head of IT Project Management at ECKware GmbH

The summary

The project is in a constant state of evolution, with the potential to expand into other locations. The ECKware team consistently introduces and tests new partner and member benefits. Such projects demand adaptive technology and reliable partners, and Open Loyalty and ECKware are ideally aligned, prepared to transform ambitious ideas into reality

"Your colleagues in customer success are very fast. They keep me in the loop and I get an answer in 1 or 2 days."
